The Commercial Pilot Licence (Helicopters) is a professional licence enabling the holder to work for remuneration.  The CPL H) can be undertaken either as an Integrated or Modular Course.  Sterling Aviation is approved to conduct Modular flying training courses.  Companies that offer the more intensive integrated courses can be found at www.srg.caa.co.uk .

CPL (H) entry requirements

The minimum course requirements must be met in full and include:
  • A total of 155 hours on helicopters (This must include 50 hrs as PIC)
  • Hold a valid JAR Class 1 medical
  • Completed and passed all of the theoretical knowledge examinations

The Course

The CPL (H) Modular course is constructed as follows:

Flight training

  • 30 hours of flight training
  • Divided into:
  • 10hrs instrument flying
  • Remaining 20hrs of General handling and Navigation training
  • If a night rating is not already held, 5 hours of night training will need to be completed prior to the application of the CPL (H) being made.

Ground training

  • 500hrs Theoretical knowledge instruction
  • 9 examinations
  • The Modular Ground School is usually undertaken through a distance learning course; run entirely at your own pace.  When you are ready, a revision course is recommended before undertaking the exams.

Skill test

Upon completion of the course, you will be required to demonstrate your navigation knowledge, ability and general handling to the Examiner, up to the necessary level for the issue of a CPL (H).
